Te Reo Maori

Teaching Te Reo Māori: Nurturing Language and Culture

Teaching Te Reo Māori in schools is an essential step toward preserving and revitalizing the language, as well as fostering cultural awareness and understanding among students. As one of New Zealand’s official languages, Te Reo Māori connects students to the rich history and traditions of Aotearoa. Integrating it into the classroom curriculum helps students appreciate the unique cultural identity of the Māori people while encouraging respect for diversity. Such integration reinforces learning by making it part of their daily interactions, rather than treating it as a standalone subject. Schools that adopt a whānau-centered (family-oriented) approach also strengthen learning by involving families and communities, encouraging students to use Te Reo Māori outside the classroom.

Lastly, teaching Te Reo Māori fosters broader life skills such as empathy, open-mindedness, and a sense of identity. It provides students with tools to become culturally responsive citizens, equipped to navigate and contribute to a multicultural society. By normalizing the use of Te Reo in schools, educators play a pivotal role in the language's revitalization and ensure that future generations uphold the mana (prestige) of this taonga (treasure).

Comprehension Skills

 Why teaching comprehension skills is important?

Teaching comprehension skills is crucial for several reasons. First and foremost, comprehension is the foundation of all learning. Spelling

 

Why teaching Spelling is important?

Teaching spelling is fundamental for several reasons, starting with its role in enhancing literacy skills. Proper spelling is a cornerstone of effective written communication. It ensures that the writer’s message is clear and comprehensible. When individuals spell words correctly, they avoid misunderstandings and can convey their ideas more precisely. This is particularly important in professional and academic settings, where clear communication is crucial.

Moreover, teaching spelling aids in developing reading skills. Spelling instruction often involves phonics, which helps students understand the relationship between letters and sounds. This understanding is essential for decoding words while reading. When students learn to spell, they simultaneously improve their ability to recognize words quickly and accurately, which enhances reading fluency and comprehension. PD. Term 1. 2023.

 

 Trip to Northland

In the Term 1 2023 school holidays, some of the JBS staff went on a trip to Northland. This trip was one of our PD. I was, in particular, excited about this trip and was looking forward to going on this trip. The main focus of the trip was to learn the wonderful histories of the Northland. I was in search of a New Zealand history for my Inquiry LTP for term 2. So I decided to get on this trip. 


While we were in Northland, we learned numerous histories of the various parts of the region. One particular history that caught my attention was the Kauri Gum Field. The history behind the Kauri Gum Field is as follows below. 


Kauri gum is a resin (a sticky substance) produced by New Zealand’s giant kauri trees. The resin helps protect the tree by filling in holes and damaged areas. Kauri trees can live for more than 1,000 years, so they make a lot of gum over a lifetime. As the trees die and fall, the ground where they grew becomes littered with kauri gum. Over time, this often gets covered by soil or swamps. Most kauri gum is found in Northland.


From the 1840s, kauri gum was exported to Britain and America to make varnish. Later, it was used in linoleum, a floor covering. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many people headed for the gum fields of Northland, hoping to find gum and sell it. They dug it out of the ground and found it in the swamps. Many of these areas no longer had kauri trees – they were scrublands covered in mānuka.


In the 1890s, it was getting harder to find gum in the ground. People started climbing living kauri trees to get gum. Some cut the trees, to make them bleed gum – but this often killed the trees.

The kauri gum industry continued into the 20th century. In the 1930s, cheaper materials for making varnish were invented. The price of kauri gum fell, and by the 1940s the gum industry was coming to an end.

What has once forested the most part of the Northland has deliberately disappeared. Only a few Kauri trees are left and they are completely protected.


Dalmatians, Māori, and British worked as diggers. They used a spear to find gum and a specially designed spade to dig it up. 

Storekeepers bought kauri gum from diggers. It was then taken to the nearest port and shipped to Auckland, where gum merchants cleaned it, graded it, and exported it. From 1850 to 1900, kauri gum was Auckland’s main export.




By the 1890s, it was getting harder to find gum in the ground. Some diggers began collecting gum from around the base of living trees and using ropes to climb to the forks where the gum was often found.

They also started cutting trees to make them bleed gum. They made V-shaped cuts called ‘taps’ in the trunk, returning months later to get the gum. Collectors used spikes on their boots and two long iron hooks to scale the tall trunks – in much the same way that ice climbers today scale frozen waterfalls with ice axes and crampons. The collectors carried ropes to get back down from the giant trees, which could be up to 50 meters high. It was dangerous work, and lives were lost. One story tells of some loggers finding a rope at the base of a large kauri. They felled the tree, and among the branches found the skeleton of a gum collector who must have climbed the tree and then dropped his rope.

At first, bled gum was seen as a ready new supply, although of poorer quality. However, it was soon clear that the practice was killing trees, and in 1905 it was banned in all state forests.


Storekeepers were the main buyers of kauri gum. They ‘grubstaked’ many diggers – allowed them to buy supplies on credit, on condition that they sold their findings to the storekeeper. Once a week the storekeeper did his rounds, delivering supplies and buying gum.

Gum was laid out at the gum tip – a cleared area, often on a rise so that it received the sun and wind. The gum’s purity was judged, a price was decided and the gum was weighed. Horse-drawn carts and large bullock teams pulled the gum on sleds to the nearest port. It was loaded onto barges, coastal cutters, and steamers, and shipped to Auckland. In the wet months, when Northland’s clay roads were boggy, transport costs often increased and supplies became more expensive.


Gum was unloaded at Auckland’s wharves and taken to the major buyers’ warehouses. It was then cleaned again and graded, ready for export. Gum was exported in boxes made from heart kauri, a high-quality timber that was often used to make furniture at the destination.


In the 1930s cheaper synthetics were developed for making varnish and linoleum. The price of gum fell, and by the 1940s it was a sunset industry. In 1985 a processing plant was built at Kaimaumau, north of Awanui, to extract resins and waxes from kauri chips and dust from a peat swamp, but it had technical problems and closed in 1989.



in varnish, but around 1910, overseas manufacturers began using poorer-grade gum to make linoleum. A market was created for low-grade gum, including small pieces known as gum nuts and chips, and previously worthless scrapings and dust.

New techniques were needed to recover small gum pieces from soil and swamps. Water-filled drums with screens – called hurdy-gurdies – washed away the soil and left behind the gum and bits of wood. Where large areas were dug over, pipes poured muddy water onto screens and sieves, and men agitated the mixture to wash away the soil. It was muddy, wet work. By the 1920s, new machines – basically larger oil-driven hurdy-gurdies, used by teams of men – could process a lot more raw material.

The material that was left after washing – gum, stones, bits of wood and debris – was dried in the sun. Then it was winnowed by throwing it in the air. A breeze carried away the lighter pieces, leaving gum behind. Later, winnowing machines were built, along with machines to separate the gum from worthless material and to clean it. Gold mining techniques were trialed – in the late 1910s a disused Otago gold dredge worked a swamp near Awanui, but without success.

PD. Developing Mathematical Inquiry Community (DMIC) 2021. Term 1

Mathematics Inquiry Communities

 


Introduction

‘Doing maths’ is looking a little different these days in some classrooms, as more collaborative approaches to solving mathematics problems are being encouraged.

In some South Auckland schools, in particular, this development of “communities of mathematical inquiry” is being led by Dr Bobbie Hunter, a researcher, academic and New Zealand-born Cook Islander, whose focus is on better meeting the needs of all students and of Pasifika learners in particular.

The roles and responsibilities of teachers and students are changing as the patterns of communication and participation have students taking more responsibility for active listening and sense-making. In a lesson, the solutions to problems are discussed, negotiated and constructed in a collective way. Learning conversations include all students, and everyone feels that their contribution is valued. Students feel that everyone succeeds when the group succeeds.

This video briefly explores the components of such a lesson. We’ll look at the mathematics problems themselves, the way in which these are ‘launched’ in the lesson before groups work together on constructing solutions, we’ll see the collective sharing of these and the way in which the teacher connects group learning to important big mathematical ideas. Finally, we’ll identify the underlying communication and participation dynamics that are essential to a successful lesson.

The problem

The problem itself is carefully chosen and crafted.

When I write a number problem, for example, my starting place is just what’s happening in my room and in the world of my students. I think hard about the numbers I want the students to work with, and I ensure that the solution can be reached using a number of different strategies or approaches. They’ve got to be able to come at the problem in a number of ways.

The problems I write for the kids must be both achievable and sufficiently challenging. But I need to be really clear myself about the big idea I want to connect to. So knowing the number of property that I want my kids to learn about is a useful starting place. Generalising is such an important part of mathematics learning.

As I create a problem, I’ve got to really know my students and know my maths! I know which strategies I want them to explore, but I also need to have anticipated, ahead of time, all the possible approaches the students might take. I also need to recognise the possible errors they might make along the way so I can use these to unpack the students' thinking and to take them forward.

We have heard how a problem should:

  • be culturally appropriate;
  • be related to a current experience or a context that is familiar;
  • challenge the students’ thinking;
  • have multiple entry and exit points;
  • be one in which a number of approaches or strategies can be used;
  • lead to the big idea and generalisation;
  • be fully explored by the teacher before the lesson, so that all outcomes and possible errors are anticipated.

The learning environment

The kind of mathematics problems teachers give their students is really important. So are the cooperative and collaborative learning behaviours in the classroom!

For everyone to be able to contribute their maths ideas to a collective solution and feel that their input is valued, teachers themselves must rethink their role and reconsider the ‘power base’ in their classroom.

Classroom behaviours and cues, attitudes and beliefs about what is important, and the implicit and explicit rules that govern the interactions in a lesson, need to be talked about openly. Changing classroom norms, and the way people communicate and participate, take very careful scaffolding. And it takes time!

Launching the problem

In order for each student to actively contribute to an agreed group solution for a given problem, all students need to understand what is being asked of them. They need to be given time to get to know and interpret the question.

Giving class time to understanding the problem may involve the teacher in making time to wait for a student to clarify their thinking before they contribute their idea, echoing an interpretation to check for meaning, or asking a student to repeat what another student has said.

Group work and teacher role

Groups are comprised of students of a range of abilities. The onus on any student in the group is to ensure that all other group members understand the idea they have shared, and also to ask questions if they do not fully understand the idea of another student. All students must take responsibility for reasoned sense-making.

As the teacher roves between groups, their focus is on the group process and dynamics. The teacher’s role is to prompt individual and group responsibility for a collective understanding of and negotiated agreement on a problem solution. It is not their role to simply give clues to find the right answer.

The teacher may prompt the group to consider how they will support one of their members to present their agreed strategy and solution to the whole class. The group must be also prepared to answer questions and respond to challenges from class members, and explain their mathematical reasoning.

The teacher is also actively seeking the group whose strategies and solutions will when shared, most effectively lead to new learning for the whole class. It takes astute noticing, and sound mathematical knowledge of a well-constructed problem, for the roving teacher to identify the group, or groups, whose solutions will best connect with the important big mathematical idea.

Plenary (sharing)

It takes skilful orchestration on the part of the teacher to ‘conduct’ the sharing session in which representations, explanations, reasoning and justification play a key part.

As students explore and explain differences and similarities in approaches and representations, they revise and extend their thinking. The questioning and argumentation that the teacher encourages, further deepens the understanding of all students.

Making connections

When the problem was being written, the important mathematical idea that this problem would lead to was clearly identified by the teacher. The nub of the lesson is at this point when the teacher makes this connection explicit for the students, and the important generalization is made.

Participation and communication at work

Throughout the lesson, a finely tuned synthesis of participation and communication structures are at work to create a fully inclusive community of mathematics ‘inquirers’.

I’ve had to work really hard on developing active listening with my kids and having them understand how important it is to ask questions if they don’t understand. My message to the kids is really about actively taking responsibility for their own learning, and for their classmates’ learning too.

It’s taken time for my students to get the whole idea of supporting each other so that everyone understands and shares in the success of the group. It's a big shift to have them thinking about clearly communicating an idea so that everyone gets it.

I’ve worked hard to have the children understand and feel comfortable using mathematical language and terms. I’ve also had to work hard to clearly understand number properties myself so that I can write problems well, and then make the connection for the children.

I’m really pleased that my kids are now learning to take a risk and will disagree or challenge someone if they’re thinking differently. They’ve had to feel safe, and that takes time. We’re now just starting to get some really good conversations about mathematics in a problem, and it’s really exciting.

Conclusion

In a classroom in which mathematical inquiry and learning is the responsibility of everyone in the class community, the teacher will often be heard to say to their students, “Remember, for a group to be successful, you all need to be asking a lot of questions”.

In fact, this deceptively simple reminder may disguise the complexity of the factors that the teacher has skillfully blended to create a safe, inclusive environment in which all the students can actively contribute to the collective success of mathematics.

 What is the Student Agency?

Student agency refers to learning through activities that are meaningful and relevant to learners, driven by their interests, and often self-initiated with appropriate guidance from teachers. To put it simply, student agency gives students voice and often, choice, in how they learn.

Learner agency is embedded in the NZC key competencies as: “the capabilities that young people need for growing, working, and participating in their communities. The school curriculum should challenge students to use and develop the competencies across the range of learning areas and in increasingly complex and unfamiliar situations” 

(Ministry of Education, 2007, p. 38).

The NZC key competencies are about developing the dispositions and sense of agency that not only empower the individual but help them better understand and negotiate the perspectives and values of others, contributing towards more productive and inclusive workplaces and societies.
